What is Trade Up! Disability Mentoring Day?

Independence Inc. and the Kansas Youth Transition Network (KYTN) are excited to expand the Trade Up! program for youth and young adults in Wyandotte County, with a Disability Mentoring Day Event in connection with National Disability Employment Awareness Month (NDEAM).

Students will spend the day exploring real career pathways in the skilled trades, hearing directly from professionals, and discovering opportunities beyond traditional college routes.

Who Should Attend?

Youth/young adults age 14-24 with any type of
disability (physical, behavioral, mental/emotional,
learning, etc. - no documentation required).

• Special Education students
• Students with IEPs or 504 plans
• General education students who identify as
  having a disability
• Non-traditional students or systems-involved
  youth

What Students will Experience...

• Structured session in small groups including:
  • Trade sessions with Anthony
  • Plumbing/Electrical/HVAC
  • College Trade Classroom Tours
  • Hands-on trades exploration tables
• Guest Speakers, including a KCK Fire Department
  Community Risk Reduction Specialist and Ember
  the Therapy Dog!

*Optional mini breakout sessions may include: 

• Verbal communication and body language in an
  interview setting
• Thinking Outside the Box Resume’-Building
• Executive Function Learning Session/Activity
